We are very fortunate to have one of Dublin city’s most beloved places right on our doorstep — St. Stephen’s Green Park, the green heart of the city. With its lush lawns, picturesque plantings, serene lake, waterfall, bridges, and elegant monuments and fountains, it forms a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling urban landscape. If you’re staying in The Shelbourne, a stroll around the Green is a must do, a chance to walk in the footsteps of countless Dubliners. In commemorating our two centuries of existence this year, it’s worth noting that our origins precede the establishment of the park, highlighting our longstanding presence in the community. Lord Ardilaun, Sir Arthur Guinness, a prominent figure who grew up in Iveagh House across the Green from us, generously purchased and landscaped the park, presenting it as a gift to the citizens of Dublin in 1880, a time when The Shelbourne had already graced the city for 56 years. Yet, amidst the charm of St. Stephen’s Green, we pay homage to our slightly older neighbours. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (@rcsi_irl), established in 1784 on 123 St. Stephen’s Green, holds a distinguished 40-year history over us. Similarly, the Royal Hibernian Academy (@rha.arts, @rha_members), located just around the corner on Ely Place, celebrated its bicentennial last year, preceding The Shelbourne by a year. Both institutions offer invaluable cultural experiences for our guests seeking to delve deeper into Dublin’s rich heritage. Nevertheless, our neighbourhood is not solely defined by age-old landmarks. We take pride in recommending visits to our younger neighbours, such as the captivating storytellers at the Museum of Literature Ireland or MOLI (@moli_museum) and the award-winning gem that is The Little Museum of Dublin (@littlemuseumdub). These dynamic institutions, situated around the Green, promise to enrich the experiences of our guests. #ShelbourneMoments #StoriesfromTheShelbourne #TheShelbourne200 #TheShelbourneBicentennial
